University Grants Commission (UGC) Officially Discontinues M.Phil Degree – Students Advised Against New Admissions

The University Grants Commission (UGC) officially discontinued the M.Phil degree, issuing a notice on December 26, 2022. The UGC, through Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D degree) Regulations 2022, clearly stated that higher educational institutions are not permitted to offer M.Phil programs. The notice emphasized that the M.Phil degree is no longer recognized.

The UGC’s decision came in response to a few universities inviting fresh applications for the M.Phil program. The official notice, available on the UGC website at ugc.gov.in, highlighted the publication of the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D Degree) Regulations, 2022 in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022.

Universities have been urged to take immediate action to halt admissions to the M.Phil program for the upcoming academic year, 2023-24. This move signals a significant shift in the academic landscape and has implications for prospective students considering advanced degrees in philosophy.”
