Aadhar – PAN Link: Know who are exempted from Linking process

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has mandated that investors and taxpayers link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with their Aadhaar card before March 31, 2023, as the fiscal year 2022-23 ends. Failure to link PAN with Aadhaar by the given deadline will result in the PAN becoming inactive, according to the I-T Department’s public advisory.

The Income Tax Act of 1961 exempts four categories of individuals from the PAN-Aadhaar linking mandate, including residents of the north-eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, non-residents, individuals of age 80 years or more, and non-Indian citizens. However, if they choose to link their Aadhaar with their PAN, they must pay the requisite fee using the e-Pay Tax feature on the e-filing Portal.

To check the status of Aadhaar-PAN linking, individuals can visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India and follow the ‘Link Aadhaar Status’ option, where they must enter their PAN and Aadhaar numbers to view the status of the link.

To link their PAN with their Aadhaar, individuals can follow the steps given on the Income Tax Department’s official website under the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option available under the ‘Quick Links’ section on the homepage.
